On 22 November 2012, the Bureau International des Expositions voted to select Astana, Kazakhstan as the host of Expo 2017. It will be Kazakhstan's first world's fair as well as the first in Central Asia.
Two cities bid for the available slot for a small, 3-month world's fair in 2017 or 2018. Both Astana, Kazakhstan and Liège, Belgium proposed their event to be held in 2017.
Plans for a bid by Edmonton, Alberta were cancelled before the bid deadline due to budgeting problems. Newcastle, Australia's plan to bid Expo 2017 were shelved in favor of a 2022 bid.
