Expo bids

Who will host the next Expos?

Expos are awarded years in advance, and countries compete for the right to host them. The BIE's Member States choose the winner by vote. Here is where the race stands for the Expos that have not been awarded yet.

01

How a bid works

A country, not a city, bids to host an Expo. Its government submits a candidature to the International Exhibitions Bureau (Bureau International des Expositions, BIE), which opens a period for other countries to enter the race. Each candidate then presents a dossier with its theme, site, dates, budget and plans for international participation, and receives an enquiry mission from the BIE.

The BIE General Assembly elects the host by secret ballot, one vote per Member State. Expo 2030 Riyadh was chosen this way on November 28, 2023, over Busan and Rome.

02

The registered Expo of 2035

As of October 28, 2026, the BIE has not announced any official candidature for the registered Expo of 2035.

Two projects are in the news. In January 2026, the United States announced its intention to bid with Miami. In Germany, the association Global Goals für Berlin is promoting Expo 2035 Berlin.

We will update this page when candidatures are filed with the BIE.

03

The next recognized Expo

After Expo 2027 Belgrade, the next recognized Expo would take place in 2032 or 2033, between Expo 2030 Riyadh and the registered Expo of 2035. No candidature has been announced yet.

04

Already awarded

Expo 2027 Belgrade, a recognized Expo, will run from May 15 to August 15, 2027, on the theme "Play for Humanity: Sport and Music for All."

Expo 2030 Riyadh, a registered Expo, will run from October 1, 2030, to March 31, 2031, on the theme "The Era of Change: Together for a Foresighted Tomorrow."
