The third of several expositions held in Paris (the first two being 1855 and 1867) stretched across multiple sites on both sides of the Seiene. The main exhibition building was a vast iron and glass hall designed by Léopold Hardy, one of the architects of the Palais Omnibus from the 1867 event.

Across the river rose the fanciful Palais du Trocadero, later leveled to build the iconic Palais de Chaillot for Expo 1937.
