Spain's first World Expo celebrated the rise of the Mediterranean port city of Barcelona as an industrial metropolis. Located on the site of a disused citadel, the expo grounds featured palatial halls for industry, fine arts, machinery, and the sciences, as well as a marine pavilion.
The expo produced a number of iconic landmarks for its host city, including the neo-Mudéjar style Arc de Triomf, the Columbus Monument, and the Parc de la Ciutadella.
